Backing Yard

Back it in before the line forms.

A top-down practice lot with real trailer steering: turn the wheel one way and the trailer swings the other. Put the trailer's wheels in the lane, square, without jackknifing.

Pick a lane, then hold Reverse.

The trick, in four lines

  1. Put your hand at the bottom of the wheel, at 6 o'clock. Move your hand the way you want the trailer to go.
  2. Go slowly and make small, wide corrections; watch both mirrors.
  3. If the trailer starts to jackknife, stop and pull forward until it straightens out. That is what "pull-ups" count.
  4. Practise in an empty lot before the first busy Saturday.

Lines 1 to 3 follow NC DEQ's "Safe Trailering & Towing". The simulator uses the standard kinematic model of a car with an off-axle hitch (wheelbase 3.6 m, hitch 1.2 m behind the rear axle, 5.5 m from hitch to trailer axle); it is a practice toy, not a driving lesson. Nothing you do here leaves the page.
